Creme Brulee French Toast

11 May

Here it is:  The smell that made those hunk-o-muscles slow down just a bit:  Creme Brulee French Toast.

Super duper easy and if you’re cool, you most likely have all these ingredients in your house.  Somewhere.  You probably just have to go get a loaf of F-Bread.  And even that doesn’t have to be fresh.  NOTE:  THIS RECIPE IS BEST WHEN MADE THE NIGHT AHEAD SO YOU CAN SLEEP LATE IN THE MORNING AND NOT WORRY ABOUT BREAKFAST.

Gather:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 6 (or more) slices French Bread
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half-n-half cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon brandy-based orange liquueor (Grandma’, Contreau, etc)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

COMBINE:
Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.  Mix in brown sugar and corn syrup, stirring until sugar is dissolved.  Pour into a 9×13 baking dish.

Arrange bread in baking dish in a single layer.  In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, half-n-half, vanilla, booze and salt.  Pour over bread.  Cover and chill for at least eight hours or overnight (even easier!)

BAKE:
Preheat oven to 350.  Remove the dish from your cold source and bring to room temperature.  Bake uncovered 35-40 minutes until PUFFED and lightly browned.

ENJOY:
Throw your kids in the car with this breakfast, some paper plates, forks and go somewhere fun to eat this breakfast!  Or, just it in in your boring ol’ dining room.  Either way, it is FREAKING DELISH!

(thanks to the best MIL for printing, sleeving and sending me this recipe for my recipe binder! XO HER!)

Choco Crossiants

10 Sep

For breakfast.  What better way to start off your morning?  Recently, my friends over at Real Simple sent me an email with quick, easy breakfast ideas for kids.  Especially when your kids are not able to multi-task eating breakfast, getting dressed and brushing their teeth…and mornings seem like a Category 5 Hurricane in your house trying to get out the door to school.

One of our favs has become what I call Choco Crossiants.  Super easy and super un-healthy.  Serve them with fresh fruit and you’ll feel better.  Ready?

1 can refigerated crossiants

semisweet choco chips or morsels

Heat oven to 375
Grease or spread parchment paper on a baking sheet

Roll out crossiant triangles and place several choco bits on each piece of dough, about the bottom third.  Its not rocket science, you really can’t mess this up (unless you are J. Sommer)

Roll the dough up starting at the wide end around the choco chips.  Bake until golden brown, about 12-14 minutes.  Serve to happy hungry children (and their grandparents who agreed to travel from Texas so M&D could gallavant off to St. Kitts for the weekend.)

These are perfect for breakfast in the car, as one of my dear friends is known for as she rushes off to work.  And I imagine the bazillion possibilities of other stuffings and….high quality gourmet chocolate.

ENJOY!
