St. Croix Home to SuperMoms!

This past Sunday, The Women’s Coalition on celebrated 30 years of crisis intervention service to women and children on St. Croix.  Every year, they host the Womens Race (remember the Children’s Race, pretty original names, huh?) which is one of their largest fundraisers.    This year, MGW entered as a team of TWENTY something and sported their Super-Pink-SuperMom uniforms, because, after all, you need super-hero powers to be a mom and raise children on this island!

They gathered at Command Central (aka Gallows Bay) to suit up, strap kids in their super strollers, and make their grand entry into town:

Once in town, they pinned on their numbers, secured their race chips and made sure their capes were just right; truly a group of SuperMoms! Exhibiting powers such as being able to leap from the table in a single bound to catch a sippy cup; change a diaper, talk on the phone, and sweep the house all at the same time; get kids ready for school, make lunches, do laundry, pay bills and still find time to have sex with her husband, despite the fact she has only had 4 hours of sleep….and lots of caffeine….

In honor of The Women’s Coalition’s thirty years of service, photographer Ted Davis braved a high-boom to take an organized aerial shot of the race participants, Mocko Jumbies and all:

Get-Away-Vehicles of choice have been aired up, cleaned off and armed with snacks and sippy cups…because you should never under-estimate the power of being prepared!

Warming up, stretching begins. 96 degree weather makes it easy to produce super sweat:

No flying allowed, it would be un-fair advantage, but nobody told SuperMom Somer that!  Let’s GO!

SuperMom strength of pushing two at a time…even though only one belongs to her!

And coming in at a modest time, because any time is a good time when you are a SuperMom:

Recharging SuperMom Powers:

At the conclusion of the race, SuperMoms were greeted by their sidekicks who promptly handed off remainder off-spring and proceeded to walk to the nearest bar.  They have their own super-hero powers that need re-charging.  These SuperMoms then sat in the shade in the park, stretched their muscles, watched their kids run and play while figuring out what to do for dinner….just another regular day of being a SuperMom on St. Croix.

At the time of print, race results had not been located, but we want to congratulate all of the runners / walkers / strollers for supporting a great cause.  My guess is Team MGW kicked some serious butt!

A Tradition In The Making

16_soakedThis year marks the 3rd year for Team GoTo to participate as a group in the Womens Race, a fund raiser for the St. Croix Women’s Coalition.

Last year was great.  I actually challenged myself by training and actually running the race with SC in the stroller.  Did pretty well- came in 2nd in the Stroller Division.  Yes, they have a stroller division.  Read about that rainy experience here.  That was fun, huh, Kel?

Each year, the race rotates from Christiansted to Frederiksted.  This year, we run east.  Well, I’ll be strolling this year seeing how I have not even BEGUN to get back into an exercise routine since SJ has been born.  Soon come…..

But, that is what is great about this race.  No pressure.  It is for a good cause and has become something I look forward to participating in as a group.  We are part of the community and it is great to see such a huge turn-out.

2007_groupThis year, the new GoTo Producer, Angela, has coordinated the team efforts.  I was thrilled to be included.  My husband will have the same job this year as photographer.  The only thing left to decide is whether to push one kid….or two.

Come out to race and support all the women this Sunday, June 7 around 4:30 at the Christiansted Fort.  Click here to find out more and to register.

Look closely- there I am cheering!!  IDID IT!!!  2007.

My Labor Playlist

26 Jan

ipodI am not much of a “run out and buy the latest music” type of person.  In fact, I mostly listen to NPR down here, and the local reggae station, which SC seems to be taking a liking to lately as well.  We noticed when we first moved down here that the radio stations were kind of stuck in the 70′s and 80′s with their music.  At first it  was kind of fun….at first.

Enter the iPod…and 6 years later.  I got the Fisherman one a few years ago for his birthday that is is addicted to.  It is in the shop right now being repaired (thank you Best Buy for the extended warranty!) and I think he is going through with drawls.  He then got me a snazzy one for …Valentines Day 2008…and now I am addicted.  I love it.  I love it for several reasons, one of which I can download pod casts for SC to keep her entertained in the __________(fill in the blank).  I Velcro it to a small little speaker case, keep it locked so she can push the buttons and feel mischievous, and it even has a Caribbean hook on it so I can attached it to her stroller….grocery cart…etc.

I love the play-lists I have created, which come in handy when you share an iTunes account with everything from vulgar rap (which I can handle at appropriate times) to Barney sings Happy Birthday.

I created playlists for SC’s first birthday, Christmas, and just a general SC FAVS with all of her sometimes annoying songs.

womenraceMy favorite was the play list I created to run The Women’s Race.  An annual fundraiser for the STX Women’s Coalition.  My friend Kelly & I trained with the kids in the strollers.  She came in First, and I came in Second in the stroller division…but I did not register in that division…bummer.  A local realtor who is well past her child bearing age and no stroller in hand was listed as the second place winner.  What gives????  On that play list were motivational songs like : Can’t Touch This, Pump Up The Jam, Ready To Run by the Dixie Chics, Another One Bites the Dust, & Walk This Way.

NEXT:  I decided to do a labor play list.  My feeling is that when “the time” actually comes, I won’t give a rats ass, and will probably NOT want any music, but I thought it would be fun to compile a list.  With the help of the oh-so-funny Fisherman, this is what we came up with over dinner last night:

  1. Push It – Salt-n-Peppa
  2. Ring Of Fire – June Carter Cash/Johnny Cash
  3. Here Comes My Baby – Cat Stevens
  4. Baby Love – The Supremes
  5. Groove is in the Heart – b52′s
  6. I’m A B!$@# – Alanis Morisette
  7. OOPS!  I Did it Again – Brit Spears
  8. Lets Go Crazy- Prince
  9. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Prince
  10. MAN!  I feel Like A Woman! – Shinia Twain (I am laughing!)

Any other suggestions you think I should add?
